Horror Strips Empty
PostSubject: Horror Strips   Horror Strips EmptySun Jul 27, 2008 6:47 am

WAHAH! I get to be the first person to post a topic!!!

So folks what do you think of the idea of having a horror-based comic strip in Singapore? Horror sells, and Southeast Asia has a wealth of scary-fuck hantus that make western ghosts and demons look like kindergarten teachers. (There's one who's just a dismembered head trailing intestines...) At the same time it's slightly corny to go the Russell Lee/ Damien Sin sort of route, which is after all more for young readers.

Personally, I think it would be great to have an ACAS horror trade comic with a variety of different horror stories written and illustrated by all of us, in teams or individually. We can all pick a hantu (or hantus) to write about. Let's make it SERIOUSLY scary, like nightmare-level crap-your-pants scary. Anyone remember Arkham Asylum...? when you look at Heath Ledger in Dark Knight, that Joker is so absolutely the Arkham Asylum Joker, trapped in solitary and ready to bite your nose off, literally, if you get too close the bars... just for fun. Freaky, freaky sort of shit.

Whatcha think? any opinions?

Haha ! and you called 'First!' too ... most excellent =]

It's a brilliant idea, and i think ACAS's writers has a wealth of excellent artists to pick from, who are well versed in
the art of gore and decapitations. I'm still a new member so i cant fairly speak for the rest of the artists,
but i think Zaki's works are rather fierce, or they can be if he chooses them to be.
and i'm not much a writer but i think it'll be a fun project for everyone to work on.
From working on character designs for the creatures to ambiance and background settings for the script.

How about horror characters who fall in love? With each other or with a specific human who they hound to hell....the idea of being pursued eternally by something that cannot die is personally traumatic

Could call it it love and eye sockets

Personally i'd be happy with scripts with dark lighting, and very adult themed stories.
Adult Themed does not have to mean sexually explicit, or overly gory or anything that wont get through Singapore censorship .... just stuff that kids wont 'get' ...
Lots of mood lighting type stories would be wonderful to color and/or ink.

...

Going the other way,
something with a lot of monsters would also be excellent.
Brighter lighting, but more details on the 'ugliness' ,
to really accentuate say, a zombie's deformities ....

I think this is an excellent idea.

If we want something that sells, propel our popularity quite rapidly provided we produce quality stories and artwork, this is the a good bet.

Horror stories appeal to a wide demographic and very much traditional to Asians.

A compilation book takes a lot of coordination.

However, are we looking at people also submitting their own mish mash of stuff, old or new - or are we talking about writing fresh stuff and our artists drawing to scripts for a more themed approach?

If old stuff then easier to start the compilation - if good enough why not

Perosnally, think should start from scratch n work in teams - refresh everything n let new eyes work together.

Could brainstorm a list n each team pick a theme - or if have a specific idea that you really like n want to work on then send out a call to the art side for recruits.

As we don't know yet is how good we are in teams - and creatives need good synergy to work together - maybe should have some kind of "icebreaker" project just to see how - will also give an indication how long each story will take - from my ad experience not all team who work together, work together. Shocked

Apologies for my absence, but things are slow enough now that I can add to these great points.

Indeed in reference to Kim's last post; a reason why we must now get hard at work on The New Paper, is to get used to the teamwork aspect of comics. We can outline small time-scales, ranging from a month to 3 months, where individuals collaborate. If the chemistry is there, we have a nigh fool proof foundation for future full blown stories & serials.

With the Horror Strips, my thinking is simply to shake things up but in a familiar way. We gotta nail TNP people. What could result from this is amazing.

From early next week, we will have to compile the testers, so as from this weekend, I will be arranging with artists to start posting stuff here. The hard copies stuff will have to be scanned and posted if possible.

Writers let your ideas flow. Any artist can take a stab at it, and we then go with the flow.

A meeting is probably unavoidable, but what we can do online, we do of course.

Lastly. We have no 'publishing guidelines' to follow, so we can do anything we like. Gratutious, tame, experimental, or indeed kid horror. I would say don't limit yourself or thougts. We can do anything we wish, so long as we stay focused 'adequately' on any given project at any given time. WE GOTTA HAVE FUN, know what I mean?

Now it's time for me to visit the other threads and see what's been goin' on up in here!

J.
